This is Part 2 of the Quickstart Demo.  In Part 1, we created a new project and we can see it on the "Projects" page.

Click on your new "Ice Cream Shop" project to view the Project Details page.

Project Details Overview

Visual Editor

The left side of the project details page is the visual editor.  This allows you to see all of the parts of your project and how they are connected.

Each box represents an "intent".  An intent is what the user intended by what they say.  So, for example, if the user says "Open Ice Cream Shop", the welcome intent will be activated.  If they say "Chocolate", the chocolate intent might be activated.

New projects always start with 3 intents:  Welcome, Goodbye, and Help.

Intent Details

The right side of the project details page is the intent details editor.  This shows the settings for the currently selected intent.  There are four tabs:  Activation, Data, Responses, Next Actions

We'll only be using a small subset of the features that are available in this demo.  Be sure to check out the other help articles and videos that cover each feature in detail.

Configure the Welcome Intent

  1. We don't need the Goodbye or Help intents for this demo.  Click the red "x" in the upper right corner of these blocks to delete them.
  2. In the "Welcome" intent details window on the far right, on the "Activation" tab, under "Intent Activation", choose "When the skill is launched" for the "Intent is activated" dropdown.
  3. Click on the "Responses" tab of the intent details window and add a new Response Group by clicking the icon at the bottom of the window.
  4. In the new Response Group that appears, under Alexa Response, click in the What should Alexa say? box and enter: "Welcome to the Ice Cream Shop.  Do you prefer Chocolate?  Or Vanilla?".  Then hit enter/return.

Configure the Chocolate Intent

  1. Click the "New Intent" button at the top of the Project Designer window.
  2. Rename the new intent, by double-clicking on the "New Intent" text at the top of the Intent Details window and type "Chocolate".
  3. On the Intent Activation tab, under Intent Activation, choose "By what the user says" for the "Intent is activated" dropdown.
  4. Select the "Welcome" intent in the "And is only activated by" dropdown.
  5. Click on the "Responses" tab of the intent details window and add a new Response Group by clicking the icon at the bottom of the window.
  6. In the new Response Group that appears, under Alexa Response, click in the "What should Alexa say?" box and enter: "Good choice!  Chocolate is also my favorite!".  Then hit enter/return.
  7. Click on the "Next Actions" tab.  Choose "End the session" option for the "After all of the above actions are complete, Alexa will..." dropdown.

Configure the Vanilla Intent

  1. Repeat the "Configure the Chocolate Intent" steps 1 through 7 above to create a "Vanilla" intent.  Enter "Vanilla is a really good flavor, but I prefer Chocolate myself." in step 6.

Next Steps

Our skill is now complete.  In Part 3 of this series, we'll test and deploy our new skill.

See you there!
