In Part 2 of this series, we built out the details of our skill and it's now ready for testing.

Test in the Browser

Click on the "Test" button at the top of the page.  This will open up the Test Window.

The Test Window allows you to completely test your skill right in the browser.  You can type in the text box at the top of the window, OR you can use your voice by holding down the microphone icon while talking and release to send.

To easily open your skill, just click in the text box at the top and hit your Return or Enter key.  This will automatically open your skill.

To test our demo skill, open the skill and make sure the welcome message is correct.  Then say or type "chocolate" and verify the response.

Open the skill again and this time respond with "vanilla".  Verify the response.

Share With Others

You can also share your skill with your friends, family, or coworkers so they can play with or test your skill.

To do this, just click the "Share" button at the top of the page.  Then click the Enable button to enable the project for sharing.

Click the "Copy Link" button to copy the shareable URL to your clipboard.  You can send this URL to whomever you want to test the skill.

Deploy To Alexa

When you're ready you can deploy your skill to your Alexa device so you can test and submit it for certification.

To do this, just click on the "Publish" button.

If this is your first time publishing a skill, Voice Apps will ask you to link your Amazon Developer account.   If you don't already have an account, you can create one in just a few minutes by clicking here:

Click on the "Link Account" button to link your account.

Once you've linked your developer account to Voice Apps, you can quickly deploy your skill.  Just click on "Deploy" to deploy your skill to your developer account.

Live Changes

Whether you test in the browser, share with others, or deploy to Alexa, changes you make to your skill will be immediately available for testing.

To test this, open the Test Window and start the skill (click in the text box and hit return or enter).   Now, click on the Welcome intent in the visual designer.  In the Intent Details window, click on the Responses tab and change the welcome message.

Start the skill again in the Test window to see/hear your changes.

Next Steps

This has been a quick walkthrough to let you create your first skill.

Feel free to experiment and make changes to your skill.  Add new flavors of ice cream or change the responses to be more creative.  You are only limited by your imagination!

Make sure you check out our other articles and videos to learn about all of the capabilities of the Voice Apps platform.

And, as always, if you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please let us know!  We're here to help!

Thanks,

Jeff
